Hello!

I am an assistant professor in Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management (ORTM) at the University of Wyoming. I study various aspects of recreation ecology and protected area management. I also teach a variety of undergraduate courses in ORTM including 4790 (Internship), 3050 (Operations, Management, and Environmental Stewardship), and 4901 (Human Dimensions of ORTM).

I received my Bachelor's degree in 2006 from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI, where I studied Environmental Science and minored in Geography and Spanish. In 2008, I received my M. Ed. in Teaching and Learning from DePaul University, in Chicago, IL. After teaching high school biology and middle school science for five years in Northern Illinois and Southeastern Wisconsin, I returned to graduate school at Utah State University in Logan, UT to pursue a Ph.D. in Environment and Society, which I completed in June, 2018, followed by a postdoctoral research and teaching position in 2018-2019.

What exactly is recreation ecology, you ask? Recreation ecology is the study of the interactions that occur between humans and the environment when people recreate. These interactions include both how humans impact natural resources like water, soil, vegetation, wildlife, and natural soundscapes, as well as how these resources impact the human experience. My work (see the Research and Projects page for more!) has focused on understanding what factors influence visitor spatial behaviors, particularly off-trail behavior, in parks and protected areas.
